Comparing VoIP Services
Price Comparisons for VoIP Service
You probably already know that VoIP phone service can save you money over traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines but be sure to do an apples-to-apples comparison before you choose a service provider.
VoIP is Cheaper
One of the main reasons VoIP service can save you money is that VoIP providers typically offer unlimited calling including long distance to the US and Canada. Traditional POTS providers often charge for long distance, require you to have a long-distance telephone plan with a certain amount of pre-paid minutes and treat calls to other area codes within the same metropolitan area as a long-distance call. Add to that the fees, surcharges and taxes and POTS lines can cost way more that the price you were quoted.
Do Your Research
But not all business VoIP providers are the same either. Some advertise a price or highlight one in their advertisements and on their website that is only available to customers with more than 50 or 100 phone lines and then only if the service is pre-paid for an entire year up front. But wait, that price is also for the lowest tier service – the one with the least number of features. Customers who need just a few phone lines will end up paying a much higher price. Also, most VoIP providers omit the fees and taxes from their quoted price so you could be in for 15-20% surprise.
Also, consider the difference between seats and lines. Most VoIP providers price their product by the seat, they sell UCaaS (Unified Communications as a Service). A seat license is a type of software license which provides a number of features in addition to the business phone line (your ability to pick up a phone and make a call). Other VoIP companies recognize that for customers considering making the jump from POTS to VoIP, the customer still thinks of the way they pay for phone service in terms of the number of lines they need or maximum number of concurrent calls they need to make or receive to run their business, not in terms of the number of phones they have (seats).
The bottom line is apples, oranges and kumquats all have their positive attributes but if you’re trying to buy phone service, you should know what you’re paying for and how much it will cost you.
